Matte Lip

Unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ve probably heard of Kylie Jenner. No matter what your feelings are for her, or her family, you can’t deny that she has some serious market power when it comes to her look. While she certainly did not create the matte lip, she has made it exponentially more popular.

Kylie has created her own cosmetic line to sell her look to her followers. The lip colors are beautiful and look great on every skin tone. But unless you have your finger on the ‘Buy’ button when the product launches, chances are you’re S.O.L. because they sell out in a matter of minutes. Her new eye shadow pallet sold out in 60 seconds when it launched last week. Not kidding. Lucky for us other cosmetic lines make very similar matte lip products that you don’t have to hover over the keyboard for, and in my opinion are of equal quality. I decided to start my search for dupes at NYX because they are reasonably priced and if I hated it, well, no big deal. But that search ended right where it started because these matte liquid lipsticks are of fantastic quality and have amazing staying power. The Lingerie line is where I found my favorites, with several shades of neutrals and mauves. My fave.

I started with three shades that really spoke to me and I felt looked good against my skin tone. This first shade by NYX is very neutral that would look beautiful with either a smokey eye or a fresh face. Finding a good nude has been bit of trial and error for me since my lips are pretty pigmented naturally, and I don’t like to look like I don’t have lips at all. This one worked perfectly for me and still has a bit of color to it so I don’t feel overly muted. The color is “Bedtime Flirt” – so scandalous.

Berry shades are an immediate draw for me. No matter how many I have, there’s always one that’s just SO DIFFERENT and I must add it to the collection. This shade from the NYX Lingerie collection, Exotic, joined the group and I think it’s just perfect for any season. I wore this one recently to brunch and a girl at the next table asked me if it was a Kylie lip color. I consider that a successful dupe.

Even though it’s a darker shade, it is still very soft and natural. If you aren’t in to major lip statements, this would be lovely for a date night with minimal make-up. An added bonus, you won’t have to worry about touching up after every sip of wine or bite of food! These really have the staying power of a lip stain, which is one of my favorite qualities in a lipstick. Nothing gets it tossed out faster than too many touch ups.

This gorgeous soft pink definitely found it’s way home with me. Pinks have a way of brightening up your face and making you look so feminine and natural. This shade is not part of the Lingerie collection but is a Soft Matte Lip Cream in the shade Cannes that has a similar formula. Glides on smooth and pigmented and doesn’t dry out my lips. This is a great option if you work in a more conservative office but still want to add a little something to your daily look. Or even just for day to day wear.

If you are dying for a Kylie Lip Kit, more power to you girlfriend. Let me know what you think. But if you don’t want to wait around for the next restock, there are options out there for some instant gratification that are equally beautiful. NYX was my first stop and I was satisfied, but there are countless other brands that have similar shades and styles that will fit what you’re looking for and your price point.

Even Snapchat is getting on the matte lip train! I mean, if only skin looked as flawless as it does in a Snapchat filter, right?!  I’m digging the round rim shades too. I’ll have to be on the lookout for a pair :).
